Eid al-Fitr Hong Kong with Fuji GFX 110mm & 23mm
/Sunday 25th June 2017 marked the end of Ramadan here in Hong Kong and this was signified by the Eid al-Fitr prayers and celebrations which were held at Victoria Park, Causeway Bay.
Hong Kong has a very large Indonesian population due to the number of domestic helpers employed in the region (Indonesians represent approximately 2% of the entire population of Hong Kong, estimated at 165,000, of which more than 90% are women.
As a lot of them gather wearing traditional Hijab for Eid al-Fitr, I thought this should present me with a great photo opportunity to try out the two new Fuji lenses that I have just received 2 days earlier (110mm F2 and 23mm F4) for the Fuji GFX medium format camera.
The entire experience for me lasted less than 20 minutes, as I arrived late to meet two of my friends at the location (I literally arrived 3 minutes before the start, and within a short time it was all over and people were leaving, so I had to shoot fast and look for interesting shots as it happened.
I considered myself blessed by the photo gods when a mini-rainstorm was unleashed right in the middle of the prayers, which of course sent many photographers running for cover and taxis, but as far as I was concerned, this just made it all look better, more dramatic and interesting.
I stayed around for 10 minutes at the end to shoot a few portraits of people as they tried to escape the puddles on the way out and then headed for well earned coffee with my friends.
All in all, a great half an hour, and a very unique and interesting religious festival that I have never had the pleasure of viewing before in Hong Kong.
